Creating Sustainable Ports for the Blue Economy

We are developing the Blue Port Index (BPI) to support maritime trade and sustainable development in the Black Sea Region. With the BPI, we aim to establish a scientific basis by evaluating the environmental and social performance of ports.

The Black Sea Region is of great importance for both BSEC and neighboring countries with its strategic location, rich natural resources and agricultural production capacity. It’s a well-known fact that maritime trade is the lifeblood of global trade and more than 80% of all merchandise trade is transported by sea.Today, the impact of maritime trade on the economic growth and sustainable development of countries is great. The upward momentum in maritime trade will continue with the increasing trade volume, especially in parallel with the increase in economic growth. The way to get the most benefit from the maritime sector is the blue economy.
